Cold-Rolled Steel Building for Thornbury Council
Sep 23, 2026
Replacing an older building is an opportunity to improve its layout, appearance and everyday usability. For this Thornbury Council project, Falcon Canopies constructed a new cold-rolled steel building beside existing facilities and a sports pitch.
The new structure features dark green external cladding, a large roller shutter entrance and an open interior illuminated by rooflights. It provides a clear example of how our cold-rolled steel buildings can fit into an established site.
The project at a glance
- Project: Thornbury Council
- Building type: Enclosed cold-rolled steel building
- Exterior: Dark green profiled cladding
- Roof: Pitched roof with translucent rooflight panels
- Access: Large roller shutter entrance and a side personnel door
- Interior: Light-coloured wall and roof surfaces with no central support columns

Replacing the existing building
The original building had textured external wall panels, a series of small windows and a roller shutter entrance beneath a pitched roof. The project photographs record its removal, the cleared site and the construction of the new steel frame.
The location gives this project its particular character. The building sits between a sports pitch and neighbouring facilities, with a paved passage along one side. The new structure occupies the same general position, retaining a large entrance facing the hardstanding.
This before-and-after sequence shows a substantial change in appearance, from the original panelled building to a neatly enclosed steel structure.

Constructing the cold-rolled steel frame
Once the site was cleared and prepared, the new frame took shape. The construction images show the columns, pitched roof members and wall rails before the building was fully clad.
The frame leaves the main floor area free of central columns. This creates a continuous interior, giving the council flexibility when arranging the space around its intended use.
Roof panels and translucent rooflights were then fitted, followed by the remaining wall cladding and entrance details.

Green cladding suited to the surroundings
Dark green profiled cladding gives the replacement building a consistent finish alongside the surrounding grass and playing fields. Matching trims define the corners, roof edges and roller shutter opening.
The large shutter sits in the gable end, providing direct access from the hardstanding into the main space. A separate personnel door opens onto the side passage, offering an everyday entrance without needing to raise the shutter.
These two access points serve different purposes while keeping the internal layout straightforward.

A bright, open interior
Inside, light-coloured wall and roof surfaces contrast with the dark green exterior. Translucent panels on both roof slopes bring daylight along the length of the building.
The interior photographs show daylight entering with the roller shutter closed, helping illuminate the space beyond the entrance. The exposed steel frame and uncluttered floor area also make the building’s layout easy to see.
Together, the rooflights, open span and separate entrances are the defining practical features of this project.

The transformation
The Thornbury Council project replaces an older structure with a steel building that combines a coordinated exterior, natural daylight and straightforward access.
The photographs tell the story from start to finish: the original building, its removal, the new framework and the enclosed space. For organisations considering a similar replacement, this project offers a useful example of a steel building positioned alongside existing facilities.
